The announcement was made by Alain Wertheimer, who co-owns the company alongside his brother, and he allocated her the position based on merit and to carry on Gabrielle Chanel and Karl Lagerfeld’s legacy.

What we know about Virginie Viard

  • In 1987, Virginie Viard joined Chanel as an intern in haute-couture embroidery and was Lagerfeld’s right-hand woman since the ’80s
  • In 2000, she returned to Chanel as a coordinator for haute couture, before she transitioned to ready-to-wear collections.
  • Since Coco Chanel, Virginie Viard will be the first female creative director for Chanel.

  • In January 2017, Virginie Viard also took the final bow in place of Karl Lagerfeld at Chanel’s couture show in Paris. She was accompanied by Vittoria Ceretti, a model, who wore the last look, an embellished bridal swimsuit.
  • In Netflix’s 45-minute episode documentary series ‘7 Days Out’, Karl Lagerfeld stated “Virginie is the most important person, not only for me but also for the atelier, for everything,” Lagerfeld said in a Netflix documentary released in 2018. “She is my right arm, and even if I don’t see her, we are on the phone all the time.”
  • Virginie Viard hardly makes public appearances and preferred to remain in the shadow of Karl Lagerfeld. In 2018, she expressed that she hated to be in the spotlight, but we believe this is about to change.
  • The new creative director of Chanel, Virginie Viard seems very private and is not a huge fan of social media. So, she did not have an Instagram or Facebook account. Double check if you are following a social media account in her name because it probably is not hers.
