Also known as the ‘The Oscars of Fashion’, the Met Gala annual event is being cooked up ready to be served on Monday the 7th of May. Find out all there is to know about it on D360.
Taking place at one of the most famous and recognised fashion institutions in the world, the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City, The Met Gala is one of the most anticipated fashion events of year, maybe only after the Big 4 catwalks month between February and March.
A-list personalities, music stars and fashion icons will be attending, so you definitely don’t want to miss it.
But there’s one more reason this year to start sneaking peeks at Met Gala 2018: be prepared for utter outrageousness as this year’s theme is out of this world.
Met Gala theme 2018 has been announced as Heavenly Bodies: Fashion and the Catholic Imagination. It has in fact been confirmed this year fashion ball’s theme will be a “dialogue between fashion and the masterworks of religious art”.
The fundraising event at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City is one that surely is no stranger to flamboyance and provocations having been the ultimate year appointment since 1971 with its Fashion Plate theme for fashion designers renowned for playing with the images and iconography that belongs to the religious sphere.
These include Dolce & Gabbana, Christopher Kane, Jeremy Scott and Jean Paul Gaultier as well as Chanel, Versace and Valentino.
Not only that as The Vatican will showcase 40 rare items strongly meaningful to the religious world: a choice that will make Met Gala 2018 the most controversial in history and will sure have the media intrepid in formulating the right sentences.
Curator Andrew Bolton stated:
Some might consider fashion to be an unfitting or unseemly medium by which to engage with ideas about the sacred or the divine
Amongst the religious archive pieces there will be a papal tiara featuring 18,000 diamonds and pieces worn by Pope Benedict 14th in the 1600s, as stated on The Guardian.
Who is hosting?
Met Gala 2018 will be co-hosted by Amal Clooney, Rihanna and Donatella Versace, whether the 2017 edition was co-chaired by pop stars Katy Perry and Pharrell Williams.
What to expect
With Rihanna hosting the Met Gala there’s a lot to expect for sure, and we don’t even begin to start to tell you the scale of epic this is going to be.
In fashion terms, Met Gala 2018 will surely trigger some of the most creative, absurd and even blasphemy-like designs we might ever see in history. And, let’s not mention how the theme picked for 2018 Met Gala is one that might even change our modern vision of religion. From 10 May to 8 October at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, everyone who is into culture as much as into fashion, will get a chance to explore the hidden stylish traits of some of the holiest institutions in the world
Met Gala red carpet
And with a theme like Heavenly Bodies and all the personal interpretations to which is subject of, we can only anticipate an extraordinary red carpet ‘show’: God knows what will go through some of the most influential rappers and actors when choosing their frock for the night.
What would you wear for such an occasion?
