5 Must-See Sci-Fi Shows on Netflix

We don’t want to think about how many hours of our lives we’ve spent already on Netflix, but the more time goes by, the more worthwhile original series keep popping up, so we also have got to keep up. Unfortunately, we are not here to help you get more sleep but to allure you into watching more of the best fantasy sci-fi tv shows that will only leave you wanting for more.

The OA

Cast: Brit Marling, Jason Isaacs, Scott Wilson

The sci-fi, supernatural series on Netflix follows the story of Prairie Johnson, a young woman who reappears after having been missing for seven years. Prairie, who was blind as a child, comes back to her hometown miraculously with her vision restored and now calls herself “The OA.” The show takes you through her mysterious past and mysterious adventures.

Sense 8

Creators: J. Michael Straczynski, Lana Wachowski, Lilly Wachowski
Cast: Doona Bae, Jamie Clayton, Tina Desai

8 strangers from different cities around the world suddenly find themselves having unexplainable experiences where they are linked to each other’s mind. They go through a series of visions and occurrences where they connect with one another’s thoughts and actions. Finally their urgent need to find out what happened and why goes beyond curiosity, as they pursue answers, a mysterious organization tries to hunt them down. Sense 8 is definitely one of the best sci-fi original series on Netflix not only because of the concept but also because it was shot in locations all over the world: Berlin, Chicago, London, Mexico City, Mumbai, Nairobi, Reykjavík, San Francisco, and Seoul. So if you don’t want to miss that out, you better start streaming!

Altered Carbon

Year: 2018
Creator: Laeta Kalogridis
Cast: Joel Kinnaman, James Purefoy, Martha Higareda

We were more than a little skeptical that Netflix would be able to take the 2002 Richard K. Morgan’s sci-fi novel into an excellent series, but damn, did creator Laeta Kalogridis do a good job.

Altered Carbon showcases a world, more than 300 years in the future, where new technology has transformed everything and where your body is just a temporary tool, and you can jump into a new one to live forever. The only survivor of “Envoys,” a rebel group of super soldiers, is revived into a new body 250 years after his death to solve the mysterious murder of Bancroft.

Black Mirror

Year: 2011
Creator: Charlie Brooker
Cast: Daniel Lapaine, Hannah John-Kamen, Michaela Coel

Unlike other shows, Black Mirror was by Netflix after two successful seasons from Channel 4. The show not only deals with real references of social media obsession but also dives deep into the associations of many sci-fi concepts, including technological surveillance, the cyberization of the human mind, and even human-like A.I. machines. Black Mirrors continuously have the viewers question themselves one question: what happens to us when technology is taken to extremes?

Stranger Things

Year: 2016
Creators: Matt Duffer, Ross Duffer
Cast: Millie Bobby Brown, Finn Wolfhard, Winona Ryder

Surprised? Nah. Stranger Things is probably one of the best original sci-fi series on Netflix. The show brings all the right ‘80’s nostalgia using references from The Goonies, E.T, to the Ghostbusters and a lot more – featuring preteens encountering interdimensional threats and extraordinary masteries after investigating one of their buddy’s disappearances.  As they search for answers, they counter more unnerving supernatural forces and a very unusual little girl.

We can promise you that you won’t be able to stop at the first episode, so get comfortable because you won’t be leaving the screen for a while.
