On a Plain and Can’t Complain: Frances Bean Cobain

05.04.2019 | By ELENA LONGARI

It was 1970 and Hey Jude fills the air in aunt Mari living room whilst a young boy’s too short fingers reach for the keys in excitement.

It is 2019 and a young woman named Frances Bean Cobain who lost her father when she was only 20 months old speaks to John Lennon’s son about her childhood as a celebrity.

Kurt Cobain had only one daughter with Courtney Love: it was 1992 and their future together would be destined to never happen, as he took his own life two years later. Francis was left without a dad, and with a mother who made news headlines for her drug overdoses series.

Who is Frances Bean Cobain today?

‘Childhood must have been a bitch’. That’s what people say when they come across obnoxious people, don’t they? Frances’ childhood story is indeed the story of a nightmare: losing a parent at such a tender age and being left with the parent who struggles to cope with anything, never mind the loss of a husband, to start with. But even before he died the couple couldn’t just keep it together and give an appearance of decent parents: Frances was even removed from their custody as young as two weeks old.

After that, it was nannies and family members who raised Frances – Courtney love lost custody of her daughter from 2003 to 2005.

A happy ending nightmare.

Today she’s probably one of the richest girls on the planet, as she now controls the publicity rights of Kurt Cobain, not her mother. In 2010 she inherited 37% of her father’s estate which according to a report by People it totals to 100k a month, for which her net worth would something like 11.2 mil.

“It’s almost like this big, giant loan that I’ll never get rid of. I have an almost foreign relationship to it or guilt because it feels like money from somebody that I’ve never met, let alone haven’t earned myself.”

–She said on RuPaul: What’s the Tee?”

Not music

And, she doesn’t even like Grunge, more specifically, Nirvana – she once said she prefers Oasis. That’s one to explain why she probably hasn’t gone into music, and combine it with her family history of turbulent success.

The glitch with addiction

If music didn’t stick from her father’s legacy, we can all agree she is a victim of her own parents as she indeed had to fight against addictions, and her success is in  finally being sober. On one if her Instagram post from February 2018 she mentioned:

“I thought I would start this post by sharing a pure moment in Oahu [Hawaii] surrounded by nature & love. This moment is a representation of who I am on February 13th, 2018. It feels significant here and now because it’s my 2nd sober birthday. It’s an interesting and kaleidoscopic decision to share my feelings about something so intimate in a public forum…”

From when she was in her mom’s womb, heroin has always been present in her life and sobering up for her meant curing from one of those genetic diseases people usually have to come to terms with and learn to live their entire existence with.

Under her belt Frances has already got a marriage and a divorce.

She is an artist: Scumfuck from July 2010 and Ghosts for Sale are amongst her most relevant works.
