The Haunting of Hill House's plot
The seven members of the Crain family will spend the summer together in a mansion: they will renovate it and sell it. This was 1992 and the Hill House back then caused the family to experience tragic loss after it showed some paranormal phenomena. Almost three decades later the siblings of the Crain family will gather yet again in Hill House and will cope with the array of sinister demons that lurk in and around the mansion as death strikes again.
Based on the book The Haunting of Hill House, a 1959 gothic horror novel by American author Shirley Jackson, this TV series swings between the present and flashbacks, confusing the viewer with a number of ghosts one is brought to press replay to make sure they haven’t missed any.
Why should you or not watch the Haunting of Hill House?
First off creator Mike Flanagan is one good reason to watch The Haunting of Hill House: he has been working as editor on the famous thriller/horror Hush (2016) and directed the whole series ‘Gerald’s Game’, which is available to watch on Netflix now.
Second of all, if you think this horror TV series is a sequence of scenes attempting to send you shivers down your spine or to make you jump off your sattie, you will be pleasantly surprised by another species of demons the Crain family has to face. The horrors of confronting each other when trauma hits them. Trauma is, in modern society, treated, eviscerated to a level in which those affected by it are able to digest it and carry on with their lives. In The Haunting of Hill House trauma generated psychological levels of depths that are simply inexplicable: the real becomes unreal, the work of the mind that makes all of the 7 members of the family see ghosts. But they all have their different ways to react and cope with paranormal phenomena generated by pain.
In an era in which mental illnesses, starting from depression, have had so much attention and awareness has been raised to make people cope with those affected by them, The Haunting of Hill House is surely a creepy and dark representation of family drama and pain, a depiction that will appeal to most viewers.
The Haunting of Hill House is amongst Netflix new releases for 2018 and it has been described as a limited series.
